MMA: Mark Munoz TKOs Kendall Grove

by Dennis Guillermo

Mark “The Filipino Wrecking Machine” Munoz, wrecked havoc inside the UFC octagon anew in Abu Dhabi, UAE in front of a good contingency of adoring Filipino fight fans as he put forth the performance of a lifetime against Kendall Grove.

Munoz came from behind and scored a second round TKO victory after grounding and pounding Grove senseless on the mat.

Grove to his credit did almost everything right in the first round catching Munoz’s take down attempts and tagging him with knees, uppercuts and had the Filipino fighter in choke holds and submissions in multiple occasions.

Call it a winning streak for Mark Muñoz. And a winning streak in impressive fashion, at that.

The Vallejo High graduate took a big step forward in his UFC career Saturday, scoring a first-round submission win via punches over Ryan Jensen at UFC 108 in Las Vegas.

The submission at 2:30 into the fight was the second consecutive and most convincing win in Muñoz’s relatively young mixed martial arts career, and one that could open up some bigger opportunities at the highest level of the sport.

Muñoz powered Jensen to the ground 1:45 into the fight and his furious punches began raining down on Jensen’s head just after the2-minute mark.

For much of the next 30 seconds, Muñoz unleashed a flurry of heavy punches that rendered Jensen helpless to defend himself.

Mark Munoz always had faith. It would seem that faith is being rewarded.

Munoz was struck by that thought recently when his wife, Kristi, found a photo from a family vacation to Carlsbad to visit Legoland. There was a miniature Lego statue of the MGM Grand. As Kristi recalled in an e-mail, Mark stood in front of the statue, put his fist in the air and said ‘Take a picture Kris! I will be fighting here one day!’

“Now, here I am today at the MGM Grand fighting in Las Vegas,” Mark Munoz said before he returns to the octagon Saturday for UFC 108 in Las Vegas. The Vallejo native resumes his mixed martial arts career against Ryan Jensen in a 185-pound bout.

Jensen, a former wrestler from the University of Nebraska-Omaha, stands almost even with Munoz on the tale of the tape, but Jensen is far more experienced, with a 15-4 record.

Munoz, who wrestled at Oklahoma, is 6-1 in his young MMA career.

“I never thought I’d be a fighter. It just so happens I am,” said Munoz, who was working toward his Master’s degree at UC Davis when he was first encouraged to join the world of MMA. It was while he was at a New Year’s UFC event in 2006 that he found his new career path.
